What's the point of exit polls in politics?

Every country conducts exit polls before elections, but what really does it achieve?

I think it’s because people are eager for early results, and exit polls provide a way for the media to capitalize on that interest.

It achieves several things.
One, it tells politicians and public what the general public sentiment is right now. That helps political parties to optimize their election campaigns for best results.
Then, it provides insights about how a particular age group, gender etc. is thinking about candidates in that moment. This is very useful for campaign planners.
And like someone else said, it is good PR, so news agencies make a lot of dough with exit polls.
